The new area, named Group 458, will be located in the northwest corner of the cemetery grounds, easily accessible from Blackstone Boulevard and between Hawthorn and Hornbeam roads once inside the cemetery grounds. It will offer an array of burial sites ranging from single graves to multi-space lots, all accommodating double-depth burials. Also designed into the new area will be a circular garden offering burial lots for those who have chosen cremation. Swan Point’s last burial area opening was Birch Grove in 2016.
While Swan Point is sensitive to creating a seamless addition that respects and enhances the cemetery’s historic landscape, we unfortunately will be clearing a good amount of unwanted and diseased trees during this project. Please be assured that we have assessed the tree status in the designated area in compliance with the City of Providence’s ordinance and evaluated overall tree health to guide conservation efforts. We have also exceeded the City’s canopy coverage requirements by achieving approximately 42.2% coverage for large trees, surpassing the 30% requirement. In addition, we are enhancing the landscape with medium-sized flowering trees which will achieve a sense of privacy and additional beauty
Our arborists have also conducted a comprehensive evaluation of all trees, documenting each for potential Significant Tree status and retention. We are preserving and integrating Notable and Significant Trees into the design to maintain the site’s historic and natural integrity. Tree allées will be established along new group roads and the central landscape to enhance the aesthetic and structural harmony of the expansion.
We are confident that we are appropriately addressing the cemetery’s need for additional burial inventory with thoughtful landscape planning that respects the legacy of Swan Point Cemetery.
